Game Recaps
03/23/10 – Bowie 5, San Antonio Churchill 1 Facing the 26-5A district champions in the first round of the playoffs, the Dawgs took note of the Bowie girls stellar 5-2 win over San Antonio Johnson in the early game at Burger Stadium and played one of their finest matches of the year, knocking off Churchill 5-1 to advance to the area playoffs. Bowie got on the board first in the 9th minute after Blake Luttrell’s cross into the 6-yard box was misplayed by the Churchill defender and Justin Bailey was there to hit the ball past the keeper to put Bowie up 1-0. Play was physical for the remainder of the half with most of the action in Churchill’s half. Earning a corner kick with less than a minute play, Nick Jones well-placed corner found Dalton Pool unmarked in the box and Dalton’s nice finish put Bowie up 2-0 at the half. An energized and fire-up Bowie squad took the field as the second half began determined to hold and hopefully add to their lead and just 6 minutes in, Bowie earned goal #3 of the night as Justin’s cross found Dalton open in the box and Dalton headed the ball past the keeper. Pressed to get back into the game, Churchill stepped up their play and scored their only goal of the night in the 22nd minute on a mis-played clearance and shot that found the net from 20-yards out. Undaunted, Bowie quickly countered 4 minutes later when Dalton’s high, curving cross found Travis Golden unmarked at the far post and Travis deftly headed the ball past the keeper just inside the opposite post. Call Cesarez closed out the scoring for the night two minutes later after Ryan Hall, playing forward, dropped the ball off to Call and his shot from distance found the upper 90 of the net. Bowie led in shots on goal at 10-4 and corner kicks 2-1. With the win, Bowie will face San Antonio Brandeis on Friday night, location to be determined. (submitted by David Luttrell) 03/12/10 – Bowie 4, Bastrop 0 On a beautiful evening at Burger Stadium celebrating Homecoming and Senior Night, the Dawgs met the Bears from Bastrop in the final regular season game of district play. With a playoff berth already in hand, Bowie played very relaxed but determined to come away with a win to gain momentum into post-season play. The Dawgs struck first in the 24th minute as senior Oscar Martinez tallied his first goal of the season on a breakaway, beating Bastrop’s keeper to find the net. Two minutes later, Josh Specht capitalized on a bouncing ball in the 6-yard box and tapped it in to give Bowie a 2-0 lead which they took to half-time. Bowie quickly put the Bears on their heels in the second half when 6 minutes into play, Eduardo Alexander’s rocket shot bounced off the cross-bar and keeper turned forward Thomas Copley chested the ball into the net for his first goal of the year. Bowie continued to dominated play and despite several promising runs and shots, it looked the game would end 3-0. Ryan Hall, normally a defender, moved up to forward and with less than a minute to play, capitalized on a breakaway opportunity to score his first goal of the year, sealing a 4-0 win for Bowie. The Dawgs led in shots on goal at 18-3 and corners 5-2. (submitted by David Luttrell) 03/09/10 – Pflugerville 3, Bowie 1 Traveling to Pflugerville in hopes to move into third place in district play, Bowie took on the Panthers from Pflugerville High School. Despite dominating the first half by outshooting the Panthers 6 to 1 and corner kicks 4 to 1, neither Bowie nor Pflugerville were able to score and the first half ended 0-0. Bowie got the scoring started in the second half as junior Justin Bailey tallied the first goal of the night in the 15th minute on a breakaway after being fed a beautiful through ball by Alexander Serrano. Unfortunately, Pflugerville quickly countered a minute later after moving the ball deep into Bowie’s final third of the field on a nice cross to the box which landed at their forward’s feet and he neatly tucked the ball in the net. Disaster struck less than a minute later when Bowie’s attempt to clear the ball in the 18-yard box was unsuccessful allowing a Pflugerville breakaway resulting in their second goal and the lead. Pflugerville closed out the scoring in the 34th minute on a well-placed cross into the box that found the head of their striker who flicked the ball into the net. Bowie led overall in shots on goal 9-5 and corners 5-2. (submitted by David Luttrell) 03/05/10 – Bowie 1, Connally 1 (Connally wins shoot-out 3-1). The Dawgs traveled to Connally Friday night looking to make it a sweep of the Cougars in district play and to edge closer to a playoff spot. Bowie got off to a quick start in the 2nd minute of the game as Blake Luttrell broke away from the Cougars defender and deftly chipped the oncoming Connally keeper, placing the ball in the net to give the Dawgs an early 1-0 lead. Play was physical as both teams were issued yellow cards in the first half and it looked like Bowie would find another goal in the first half as several shots either were just wide or skimmed over the top of the cross-bar, but the half ended 1-0. Connally earned the equalizer in the 2nd minute of the second half on a questionable foul just outside the 18-yard box and the resulting free kick found the upper 90 of the net. Play was fairly even throughout the second half as both teams looked for the winning goal, with the Dawgs pressing hard in the final 5 minutes and several attempts either just miss or were stopped by the Cougar’s keeper. The game ended tied 1-1 and moved to a shoot-out, which Connally won convincingly. Bowie led in shots on goal at 8-4 and corners 2-0. (submitted by David Luttrell). 03/03/10 – Bowie 4, Akins 0 On a pleasant night at House Park, Bowie squared off against Akins hoping to avenge an earlier season loss and to stay in the top 4 in district play. Despite several opportunities by the Dawgs to take an early lead, it was not until the 34th minute of the first half before Bowie broke through. Josh Specht’s well placed corner kick found Call Casarez unmarked in the box and Call headed it home to stake Bowie to a 1-0 lead that it would never relinquish. Bowie dominated play in the first half, not allowing the Eagles a shot on goal and only 2 corner kicks. The Dawgs struck early in the second half just 6 minutes in as Benton Mahaffey’s throw-in sailed high into the box and Travis Golden headed it past Akin’s keeper for the second goal of the game. Eight minutes later, Benton’s resourcefulness paid off as he charged the Akins keeper as he attempted to clear the ball from the box, leaped high in the air, the ball hit him in the back and rebounded over the surprised keeper’s head into the net to give Bowie a 3-0 lead. Bowie’s final goal of the night came in the 27th minute as Eduardo Alexander’s breakaway was stopped when an Akins defender grabbed Eduardo from behind in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Eduardo calmly stepped up and stroked the ball into the net to complete a 4-0 win. Bowie led in shots on goal at 8-3 while Akins lead in corner kicks at 3-2. (submitted by David Luttrell). 02/27/10 – Bowie 5, Austin High 0 With blue skies and mild temperatures on Saturday morning at House Park, Bowie looked to make it two victories in a row and stay in the hunt for a post-season playoff birth. The Dawgs totally dominated the Maroons, posting a strong and much-needed 5-0 win. Bowie’s first goal came in the 14th minute as Travis Golden’s chip into the box found Dalton Pool unmarked and Dalton headed the ball into the net. Twelve minutes later, after Blake Luttrell’s run into the box resulted in a Bowie corner kick, Josh Specht hit a driving ball into the box and Dalton was there again to head the ball past Austin High’s lunging keeper. Bowie continued to press for the remainder of the half, tallying 8 shots on goal in the first half, however the half ended with Bowie up 2-0. Bowie’s third goal of the came in the 10th minute of the second half as Blake Luttrell’s breakaway and shot deflected to Griff Lisheron and Griff neatly chipped the ball over the keeper into the net. The Maroons best chance to score came 5 minutes later after a defensive miscommunication in front of Bowie’s goal almost resulted in a goal except for Griff’s last minute sprint to sweep the ball away before it entered the net. The Dawgs scored twice in the last 5 minutes of the game, the first coming in the 35th minute as Eduardo Alexander’s deep cross found an open Mario Moreno on the right side and his resulting shot found the net. Bowie’s defense got in the act as fullback David Cornyn moved up to play forward and was rewarded with Bowie’s 5th and final goal of the game in the 37th minute as Eduardo Alexander executed another fine cross to find David on the right side and David, looking like a true striker, volleyed the ball over the Maroon keeper. The Dawgs led in shots on goal at 18-5 and corner kicks 4-1. (submitted by David Luttrell) 02/23/10 – Bowie 1, Anderson 0 Needing to secure a win to stay in the race for the playoffs, Bowie met Anderson Wednesday night at Nelson Field and came away with a hard-fought 1-0 win. Excellent goal keeping play by Anderson’s sophomore goalie kept the game close as the Dawgs had 11 shots on goal in the first half with the Trojan keeper making 5 incredible saves, the best coming with less than 10 minutes to go in the half. Blake Luttrell’s cross found Dalton Pool making a run into the 18-yard box and Dalton’s 1-touch volley was headed for the upper 90 of the net but was turned away at the last second by the keeper. The first half ended with Bowie dominating play but the score knotted at zero. The tempo slowed a bit in the second half and finally in the 25th minute Bowie won a throw-in deep in Anderson’s end of the pitch. Benton Mahaffey’s patented long throw-in found Zach Fields unmarked in the box and Zach’s volley whistled past the keeper into the net giving Bowie the lead for good. The last ten minutes of the game became much more frantic as the Trojans tried to repeat their prior game performance of scoring a late goal to tie the game, but the Dawgs kept them at bay to preserve the win. Bowie led in shots on goal at 15-2 and corner kicks 4-1. (submitted by David Luttrell). 02/19/10 – Westlake 3, Bowie 0 Starting off the second round of district play, the Dawgs met a much improved Westlake Chaparral squad Friday night at Westlake Stadium. The Chaps showed that they were ready to avenge their 1-0 loss to Bowie earlier in the season, capitalizing on an own-goal early in the game and several defensive miscues resulting in a 3-0 win. Despite what started off as a fairly even match over the first 10 minutes, Westlake took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of the first half when the Dawgs tried to clear the ball in front of Bowie’s goal, however the ball deflected into the net. Giving the Chaps new found momentum, Westlake added another goal before half-time and took a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Bowie came out looking to cut Westlake’s lead in half and were close on several attempts but were turned back by solid goal keeping play by the Chaps. Play got a bit physical as both teams were shown yellow cards in the second half. Unfortunately the Dawgs were not able to find the net and in the 22nd minute of the second half, Westlake’s forward received the ball in the final third of the field, cut the ball back to his right and his shot found the net for the final goal of the game. Bowie led in shots on goal at 8-7 and both teams ended the match with 4 corners a piece. (submitted by David Luttrell) 02/16/10 – Bowie 0, Bastrop 0 (Bowie wins shoot out 3-2). The Dawgs traveled to Bastrop’s new stadium hoping to secure a win that would keep them near the top of the district standings on Tuesday night. The Dawgs dominated play in the first half, but once again had difficulty finding the net. Despite leading in shots on goal 5-0 in the first half, the first half ended 0-0. Bowie came out determined to score in the second half, making numerous runs at the Bear’s keeper, however he proved up to the task turning away several good opportunities. Mid-way through the half it looked like Bowie had taken the lead when Eduardo Alexander’s right-footed volley from 20-yards out found the net, however he was called off-sides. Bastrop never really threatened as Bowie’s back line kept them at bay and the game ended 0-0, moving once again to a shoot-out. Keeper Thomas Copley came off the bench for the shoot-out, blocking 3 of the Bear’s 5 shots. Bowie converted on its 1st, 3rd, and 5th shots by Josh Specht, Ben Shadburne and Blake Luttrell, leaving it up to Thomas to secure the win on the Bear’s last shot. Thomas came out strong, lunged to his right and blocked Bastrop’s shot to secure the shoot-out win. Bowie led in shots on goal at 12-1 and corner kicks4-1. (submitted by David Luttrell) 02/13/10 – Bowie 1, Pflugerville 1 (Pflugerville wins shoot out 2-0) On a beautiful Saturday morning at Burger Stadium, the Dawgs and Panthers met looking to gain ground on league-leading Anderson. Both teams spent the first-half measuring each other out and despite each team having a couple of chances to score, the half ended 0-0. The second half saw the pace stepped up as both teams pressed to take the lead with the game’s first goal. That came for the Panthers in the 28th minute as Pflugerville’s striker received the ball just outside the 18-yard box, made a quick move to the center of the field and his shot found the upper 90 of the net. 02/09/10 – Bowie 3, Connally 2 Despite giving up an early goal in the 5th minute of the first half to the Cougars, the Dawgs fought back and put one in the win column on Tuesday night at Burger Stadium, defeating Connally 3-2. Bowie dominated play for the first five minutes, not allowing Connally to cross mid-field, but on their first penetration into Bowie’s defensive third, the Cougars capitalized, hitting a curving shot past keeper Thomas Copley into the upper 90 of the net at the far post. Bowie continued to apply pressure, then in the 23rd minute earned the equalizer when Eduardo Alexander hit a volley from 20 yards out over the outstretched keeper’s hand and just under the cross-bar into the net. Bowie took the lead for good just 4 minutes into the second half when Josh Specht’s free kick found Travis Golden unmarked in the box and Travis headed the ball into the net past the Cougars keeper. Bowie’s final goal of the night came in the 30th minute as Blake Luttrell dribbled deep into the Cougar’s final third, cut back around the defender, and hit a low, hard shot just past the keeper into the net. The Cougars made it interesting as they converted a well-struck free kick with 5 minutes left in the game for a goal making the score 3-2, but the Dawgs held them off to preserve the win. Bowie led in shots on goal at 13-3 and corner kicks 9-2. With the win, coupled with Westlake’s defeat of lead-leading Anderson and Akins defeat of Pflugerville, Bowie is in a 4-way tie for second with Pflugerville, Connally and Akins; all 1 point behind Anderson. (submitted by David Luttrell). 02/05/10 – Akins 3, Bowie 2 Bowie faced a quick, talented Akins team on Friday night at Burger Stadium, scoring two second half goals, but in the end, were not able to turn back the Eagles. Getting off to a fast start, Akins scored in the 3rd minute of the game after a defensive miscue allowed Akins’ winger to cross the ball into the box to a unmarked teammate and his shot found the net to put Akins up 1-0. Both teams saw chances go unrewarded for the remainder of the half and Akins took the lead into half-time. Bowie came out strong in the second half and tied the game in the 11th minute of the half as Travis Golden found Blake Luttrell open on the left side and Blake’s cross found Dalton Pool on a run up the right side, ending with Dalton’s shot past the Eagles’ keeper to find the net. Bowie quickly took the lead just 3 minutes later as Travis Golden dribbled up the right side, cut the ball to his left foot and his shot from 20 yard out found the net. Undaunted, the Eagles continued to push the ball forward with slashing runs and in the 24th minute won a free kick in the final third of the field. A well struck ball into the box and an un-marked run by an Akins player froze keeper Thomas Copley allowing the ball to bounce untouched into the net to tie the game. Both teams pressed and it appeared that a shoot-out would be the case as the clock wound down under ten minutes, however Akins earned the game winner in the 34th minute as defensive mis-cues by the Dawgs allowed the Eagles forward to hit a low shot that found the net, making the score 3-2. Bowie led in shots on goal 8-3 and corner kicks 6-2. (submitted by David Luttrell). 02/02/10 - Bowie 0, Austin 0 (Bowie wins shoot out 2-0) On a night when the Dawgs dominated play with 18 shots on goal and 7 corner kicks, Bowie was not able to capitalize against Austin High for the all important winning goal. Despite numerous Bowie breakaways, shots were either just wide of the net or the Maroons keeper was up to the test and made 10 saves on shots that would have given Bowie at least one goal, if not more. Defensively, Bowie’s back line turned away Austin High repeatedly and except for one exceptional save by Bowie keeper Thomas Copley in the 37th minute of the first half on a breakaway, Austin High never really threatened during the game. The Dawgs had two great chances in the second half, the first coming in the 3rd minute of the second half when Mario Moreno’s blast hit the post and bounced harmlessly away. The second came in the closing minutes of the game when defender Dalton Pool made a brilliant run up the left side into the box, but his shot skipped just wide of the far post. Despite a frenetic final 3 minutes, neither team was able to mount a challenge and the game ended 0-0. Moving to the shoot-out, keeper Thomas Copley was a force in goal, turning away all 4 of the Maroon shooters, while Travis Golden scored the first shoot-out goal and Dalton Pool, shooting fourth got the winner as he fooled Austin High’s keeper and hit a low shot into the net. Bowie led in shots on goal at 18 to 2 and corner kicks 7-2. With the shoot-out win, the Dawgs are currently tied for second place in district with Pflugerville and Connally with 6 points each, behind league leading Anderson with 7 points. (submitted by David Luttrell) 01/29/10 – Bowie 2, Anderson 2 (Anderson wins in shoot out) On a very cold, windy night at Nelson Field, the Dawgs looked to remain on top of the district standings after opening district play on Tuesday against Westlake with a win. With the wind at their backs, Bowie controlled play and took the lead in the 17th minute after Blake Luttrell’s corner kick was cleared back to him 15 yards out on the wing and Blake hit a beautiful curving shot from the left side that curled in over the keeper’s outstretched hands into the net. The 1-0 lead looked like it would hold until half-time; however in the 36th minute on another corner kick, Mario Moreno found the net after the ball was not cleared from the Trojan’s box, putting the Dawgs up 2-0 going into half time. With the wind at Anderson’s back, it became a game of two halves as the Trojans dominated play and in the 20th minute, earned a corner kick that resulted in their first goal of the night as the wind-aided kick found the upper 90 portion of the net. Both teams looked for goals over the next 20 minutes, unfortunately it was Anderson that broke through with just 11 seconds left on the clock as their long-shot from just inside mid-field bounced in the box, was mis-played and skipped into the net, sending the game to a shoot-out. Anderson’s shooters capitalized on their first 3 shots making all three while the Trojan’s keeper proved up to the task as Bowie failed on their attempts, giving Anderson the all-important extra point in the standings. Bowie led in shots on goal at 6-3 while the teams were tied in corner kicks 7-7. (submitted by David Luttrell) 01/27/10 – Bowie 1, Westlake 0 Bowie opened district play against Westlake at Burger Stadium and brought home a well-deserved 1-0 win. Bowie dominated play in the first half with several promising attempts on the Chaps keeper, but were not able to convert. Finally, with 6 seconds left in the half, Benton Mahaffey’s long throw-in to the Westlake 6-yard box found Zach Fields unmarked and Zach headed the ball just past Westlake’s keeper for the score. The second half saw more balanced possession in the mid-field, but it was the play of Travis Golden and Blake Luttrell near Westlake’s goal that terrorized their back line with strong runs into the scoring area that nearly resulted in goals that would have put the game away for good. Blake’s rocket from the left side mid-way through the half was somehow miraculously saved by the Chap’s keeper to keep the game at 1-0. Travis’ deft foot skills allowed him to take the ball near the goal on several occasions but he was unsuccessful in finding the net. Bowie’s back-line was never really threatened thanks to strong mid-field play from Call Casarez, Benton Mahaffey, Josh Specht, Nick Jones and Griff Lisheron coupled with stalwart defense performances by Dalton Pool, Ben Shadburne, Ryan Hall, Zach Fields and David Cornyn. Bowie led in shots on goal 6-2 and corner kicks 5-2. (submitted by David Luttrell) 01/19/10 - Bowie 4, Leander 1 Bowie traveled to Leander for its final non-district match and left with a 4-1 victory. Leander struck first in the 15th minute of the first half when an unfortunate defensive mis-communication led to a ball not being cleared and the Lion's striker finding an open net for the goal. Bowie answered quickly 5 minutes later when Travis Golden's shot bounced off the post to Justin Bailey and Justin rifled it into the net for the equalizer. Bowie took the lead for good in the 30th minute when Travis was taken down in the box and his resulting PK shot fooled the Leander keeper. Bowie's 3rd goal of the night came just two minutes later when Dalton Pool's free kick bounced free in the box and Josh Marquette was there to put it in the net. Bowie's back-line of Dalton Pool, Ryan Hall, David Cornyn, Zach Fields and Ben Shadburne along with fine keeper play by Josiah Steinle kept the Lion's tamed for the rest of the half. The second half was fairly quiet until the 24th minute when after a series of silky passes among Bowie's midfielders allowed Travis Golden to deftly maneuver the ball around several Leander defenders and his low, hard shot found the net for the final goal of the game. The Dawgs continued to play well defensively as Griff Lisheron, Adam Lopez-Syga, Josh Marquette and Nick Raofi kept the Lions at bay along with several nice saves by keeper Thomas Copley. Play became increasingly aggressive and in the 32nd minute, the game was called after a series of events resulted in two red cards being issued to the Leander players and one to Bowie. Bowie led in shots on goal at 10-4 and corner kicks 4-0. 01/16/10 - Governor’s Cup – Game 3 :Strake Jesuit 2, Bowie 1 Seeking to go undefeated in the Governor’s Cup, the Varsity faced a very talented team from Stake Jesuit, a college prep school from Houston at Cedar Park H. S. on Saturday morning. The Crusaders, having tied one game and won another, were also looking to stay unbeaten. Bowie almost got an early goal in the 10th minute of the game as Travis Golden’s shot ricochet off the post. The Dawgs took the lead in the 18th minute of the first half as Justin Bailey’s curling, upper 90 shot from 20 yards out bounced around inside the corner of the goal, then came out requiring a conference between the center ref and linesman before the goal was awarded to Bowie. Both teams stepped up the pressure for the rest of half, but thanks to several good saves by keeper Thomas Copley, the half ended with Bowie up 1-0. Deer Park got an early equalizer just 2 minutes into the second half from a throw-in to an unmarked player in the box who headed it into the net to tie the score. The quick pace of the game continued with both teams having chances that went unrewarded. Strake took the lead in the 23rd minute on another set piece as their corner kick to the front post was headed in by another unmarked player. Bowie pressed for the tying goal for the remainder of the game but was stymied by the Crusaders strong defense. Strake led in shots on goal at 4-3 and corner kicks at 6-1. (submitted by David Luttrell) 01/14/10 - Governors Cup – Game 1: Bowie 3, Deer Park 0 In game 1 of the Georgetown Governor’s Cup, Bowie took on a talented Deer Park team at Georgetown Stadium in cool, rainy conditions. Evenly matched, both teams spent most of the first half looking for a chink in each other’s armor and an opportunity to get on the board first. Finally, in the 32nd minute of the first half, Nick Jones took a free kick from 30 yards out, sending a low, hard shot into the box. Dalton Pool’s run across the box distracted the keeper and Nick’s shot bounced in the 6-yard box and skipped into the net for the first goal. Deer Park increased its pressure making numerous runs into the box, however Thomas Copley’s play in goal kept Deer Park scoreless, and the half ended with Bowie up 1-0. The Dawgs got on the board first in the second half on another set piece in the 11th minute when Dalton deflected Josh Specht’s free kick in the box past the keeper to score a goal on his birthday. Bowie held off several Deer Park attacks thanks to great play by defenders Dalton Pool, Ben Shadburne, Ryan Hall, Zach Fields, David Cornyn, Josh Marquette and keeper Josiah Steinle and put the game away for good in the 35th minute on another set piece. Dalton’s free kick from 30 yards out into the box resulted in a shot by Travis Golden that deflected to Call Casarez and Call deftly found the back of the net for the final goal of the match. Bowie led in shots on goal 10-7 and corner kicks 7-3. (submitted by David Luttrell) 01/11/10 - Bowie 5, Smithson Valley 1 Playing on their home field at Burger Stadium for the first time this year, the Dawgs took the advantage and defeated the Rangers 5-1 on clear but cold night. Bowie got on the scoreboard first in the 14th minute when Blake Luttrell was taken down just outside the penalty area and Travis Golden converted the free kick on a hard, low shot to the net. Smithson Valley answered two minutes later on a loose ball in the Bowie box that their forward deftly moved to his right foot and shot it past Thomas Copley in goal. Bowie dominated play from there on, but was not able to add to the score before halftime. That changed in the 8th minute of the second half, when Blake Luttrell was taken down hard, this time in the box and Travis converted the PK attempt completely fooling the Rangers keeper. Five minutes later, on a ball that moved between several Bowie players in front of the goal, Benton Mahaffey was able to capitalize and put the ball into the goal. Bowie maintained pressure on the Rangers’ goal and in the 17th minute, defender Zach Fields sent a long, searching ball into the box that sailed over the Rangers’ keeper and into the net for goal number 4. The 5th and last goal of the night came in the 21st minute of the second half after Benton Mahaffey’s long throw-in was played around in the box, then Blake Luttrell was able to tap it in to the net to close out the scoring. Bowie led in shots on goal at 12-1 and corner kicks at 7-4. (submitted by David Luttrell) 01/09/10 - Hay Rebel Cup Tournament - Game 4 – Bowie 3, Anderson 2 In the Tournament Championship game to decide 3rd place, Bowie faced district opponent Anderson. Both teams battled for dominance in the first half and it appeared the half would end 0-0; however the Trojans were awarded a PK in the 38th minute when their forward was taken down hard in the box. Anderson converted to take a 1-0 lead; however it was short-lived as Bowie scored less than a minute later as Blake Luttrell took a pass from Travis Golden on the right side, cut the ball to his left foot and hit a curling shot to the far post past the keeper into the net. The half ended with the Dawgs and Trojans tied 1-1. Bowie quickly took the lead in the second half as the Golden-Luttrell combination was effective again when Travis passed the ball to Blake on the left side and Blake’s left-footed shot skipped past the keeper for goal number 2. Play got a bit sloppy as both teams were issued yellow cards and numerous fouls were called. Anderson’s mid-field stepped up the tempo trying to score a tying goal, however Bowie scored next as Benton Mahaffey’s long, effective throw-in in to the box resulted in a “rear-end” deflection off of Blake Luttrell, earning him a hat trick for the game. Anderson scored a meaningless second goal with less than a minute to play and the Dawgs killed off the clock to win 3-2 and take third place. Bowie led in shots on goal 7 to 2 while Anderson led in corner kicks 4-3. 01/08/10 - Hay Rebel Cup Tournament - Game 3 – Bowie 2, Manor 1 On Friday evening, Bowie met the Manor Mustangs in the last game of pool play seeking a victory to shore up first place in their bracket. The Dawgs were forced to play with 10 men for most of the game due to a straight red card to Bowie defender Zach Fields for dissension. The Mustangs scored first in the 17th minute of the first half on free kick that hit one of our defenders and deflected into the net past our keeper. Bowie had several chances, its best coming as Blake Luttrell was fouled inside the Manor box resulting in a PK that Travis Golden finished to knot the score at 1 in the 31st minute. Both teams fought to regain the lead in the first half; however it ended 1-1. Despite being down a man, the Dawgs dominated the second half in possession and finally got the winning goal as Mario Moreno took a throw in from Benton Mahaffey and hit a shot into the goal past the keeper to make the score 2-1. Bowie’s defense kept Manor at bay for the rest of the game to secure the win. The Dawgs led in shots on goal 12-4 and corner kicks 7-1. 01/07/10 - Hay Rebel Cup Tournament - Game 2 – Bowie 3, Steele 1 In game 2 on Thursday, Bowie faced a competitive Steele team at Bob Shelton Stadium and kept up their winning ways with a 3-1 win. Despite going in to a stiff wind, Bowie got off to a quick start scoring in the 9th minute of the first half as Travis Golden played a nice through ball to Blake Luttrell on the right side and Blake’s shot found the net skipping past the keeper. It looked like Bowie would take that lead to the half, however Steele picked up the tying goal on a long, wind-aided shot that just sailed over our keeper. Bowie quickly regained the lead 3 minutes into the second half as Benton Mahaffey took a pass from Travis Golden and his shot slipped past the goalie into the side netting. Dalton Pool wrapped up the scoring in the 37th minute knocking a loose ball in the Steele box into the net. Bowie dominated in shots on goal at 11 to 4 and corner kicks at 2-0. 01/07/10 - Hay Rebel Cup Tournament - Game 1 – Bowie 2, Leander 0 Battling very cold and windy conditions in game 1 of the tournament, the Dawgs secured a 2-0 win over the Lions. Going against the wind in the first half, Bowie saw several chances go awry and the first half ended 0-0. Bowie got its first goal quickly in the 8th minute of the second half as Blake Luttrell juked a Lion defender and hit a hard shot at the keeper which was deflected to the feet of Josh Specht in front of the goal and Josh neatly tucked it inside the post. The Lions were never able to mount much offense into the wind and gave up the second goal of the game in the 38th minute of the half as Eduardo Alexander stole the ball and hit a hard shot from the right side that found net. Bowie totaled 10 shots on goal to Leander’s 2 while each team had 3 corner kicks apiece.
